Preoperative Instructions

IV ANESTHESIA

  • You may not eat or drink — including water — after midnight the night before surgery until your surgery is complete.

    • Take your daily medications with no more than 2 ounces (2 oz.) of water up to 2 hours before your procedure unless instructed otherwise.
  • A responsible adult must accompany you, stay during the procedure, and drive you home. You may not drive a vehicle or operate machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia. Guardians must accompany minors.

  • The use of marijuana, alcohol, or recreational drugs can adversely affect the medications that we administer. Please discontinue use of these substances 48 hours before your procedure.

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing and flat shoes. Do not wear nail polish or lipstick. No contact lenses or head and neck jewelry.

  • If you feel an illness such as the flu, sore throat, cough, or bowel upset pre-operatively, please notify the office.

Women, please note: Some antibiotics may interfere with the effectiveness of your birth control pills. Please check with your pharmacist.

LAUGHING GAS (NITROUS OXIDE)

Adults

Have something light to eat pre-operatively. Please, no heavy dairy — it may lead to nausea.

Children (<18yrs old):

You may not eat or drink pre-operatively on the day of the procedure.
